This week it's another dip into the area of pet first aid. We all hope and pray that pets never have an emergency situation or they need the attention of a vet? What if they do? What if your pet is running a fever? Do you know how to properly check for a fever in a pet and to keep them from being startled and possibly biting in the process? What about the idea of having to grab their collar in a situation when they might dart off in excitement? What about the idea of having to use a muzzle on a pet? Could they be tolerant of a muzzle if one were put in place?
As the usual advice goes, Jodi explains that positive reinforcement and acclamation ahead of the situation is a great way to prevent bad things from happening. Believe it or not, you can actually get a dog accustomed to having their tail lifted up to get a temp check. You can also utilize some other positive ways to help your dog learn in advance that sometimes things happen and that a layer of fear can be removed in advance if the proper preparation is done.
There ya have it! Like any relationship, keeping shocks and surprises out of them is generally a great first step. A managed relationship with your pet before an incident happens will keep you and your dog ready for any kind of startle or potential injury. Make sure you are investing the time in your pet so that if/when the worst case scenario plays out...you're both the best in show when it comes to handling the problem.
