Are you ready for a wonderful evening of food, drink and fun with a focus on one of the most important life skills we need? October 26th is the date you'll need to set on your calendar as Muskegon Rotary is having an event at the Culinary Institute of Michigan to benefit Read Muskegon. Read Muskegon is an organization focused on literacy and the desperate need we have to help improve reading for all ages here in Muskegon.
Literacy isn't only a concern in Muskegon, it's a nationwide issue. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 43 million adults in the US posses low literacy skills. 8.2 million could not participate in PIAAC’s background survey either because of a language barrier or a cognitive or physical inability to be interviewed. That's a staggering amount of people without the basic skills needed for almost everything in life. Read Muskegon Works with all levels of literacy and language barriers. It's a program that's grown from one room in the upper corner of a church into a dynamic organization that reaches out county wide to help anyone willing to learn. Their results are mind blowing.
Rotary promotes "Service Above Self". It's a motto they exercise rapidly and often. In Muskegon you'll see their work all over town and at your favorite events, and internationally, helping Polio, assisting with clean water, education, supporting moms and children and more and of course, literacy....well, this is an event made in heaven for those who'd like to have an indulgent night out and support the efforts of so many who've come together for this local purpose, and the goal? They would like to raise $10,000 for Read Muskegon
Carla Flanders of CMF Marketing and Events reached out to bring everyone together for a minute to talk all about this event. Joining us are Christopher Sowa and Amanda Miller from the Culinary Institute of Michigan. We met up in Courses which is the restaurant in the CIM just before lunch and got all the info for ya!
GET YOUR TICKETS! This will be an awesome night of food and drink as well as purpose. The students at the CIM get real world hands-on experience while the community sets a goal for purpose. Read Muskegon will also be on hand to help you learn more about their work and how they change the lives of all they touch. It will be an outstanding evening! Hope to see you there.
