By definition, a deposition is "the process of giving sworn evidence." That's all there is to it. It's a conference where both sides of a situation meet up and talk about the facts of the case, under sworn testimony with a court reporter on hand to make sure that what's said is of record and as the case moves forward to the judge, what's been said can be submitted for the decision and it can also be used in some situations in a cross examination situation where an attorney can refer back to a certain instance in that deposition if what's being told on the stand, doesn't quite match what's been written down before.
