By definition - "A subpoena is a legal document that commands a person or entity to testify as a witness at a specified time and place (at a deposition, trial, or other hearing), and/or to produce documents or other tangible objects in a legal proceeding. Subpoenas are time-sensitive with court-imposed deadlines." So that seems to be that right? But it's in the delivery and response to that subpoena that the intricacies of the legal world unfold and it comes down to you needing to decide if you think that self service, self service with an assist or if using the help of a lawyer if what's in order.
A subpoena is possible as a DIY project, however there are still somethings that you'd have to involve the assistance of a judge for in issuing one yourself. You may need a process server as well.
