Welcome back to the Muskegon Channel. Today I am proud to announce that I am going to help bring you safety segments with our first responders here in Muskegon county. Today I started things off with the Deputy Chief and the Fire Marshal with the Norton Shores Fire Department #3.

Did you know that the U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 840 home fires per year that began with decorations, excluding Christmas trees, in 2011-2015 according to the NFPA. The Deputy Chief helped to explain that candles start more the one-third or (36%) of those fires. Some of the ways that you can prevent from having a fire, not using real candles, never leaving an open flame unattended, Keep candles on an open counter (without cupboards overhead) and at least 12 inches away. nsfd patchFollow the NSFD on Facebook

Everyone loves to show their Christmas spirit and sometimes even try to outdo their neighbors but when you are putting up said Christmas Lights and decorations should never place more than 3 strands of lights together before plugging it into the outlet. It is also important to know that you should only use an extension cord for the momentary uses NEVER long term and certainly NEVER covering the plugs or cords with blankets, carpets or even tape. Instead you should plug the decorations into a power strip in case you accidentally overload it. That way it will trip the strip instead of your breakers. It’s also important because you could even melt the cord

Have you ever experienced the moment when you placed your tree in the most perfect spot in your home only to realize you now have to squeeze your furniture around it and have very little room to walk? Yeah, I had this very thing happen to my family and I this year after setting up our tree. Talking to the Deputy Chief and Fire Marshal they explained that you should have a clear rough in and out of all areas of your home. This way if you do have a fire you will not trip on any of your furniture on your exit out of your home nor will the firemen that are coming into the home to help. Back to the perfect spot for your perfect tree... remember that it should not be placed next to a fireplace, portable heater or a heat source of any kind. There is an age-old debate on whether you go real or fake and which is better, if you have a real tree make sure that you keep it hydrated, watering it at least once a day. However, if you choose to fall on the other side and go with a fake tree you also need to remember not to connect more than three strands of lights together. You should also make sure that your connections are tight not to allow any room in-between the connections for something to get there. When you have the light connections inside the tree you should make sure that they are connected to a power strip placed inside the tree or one that may be provided with the tree.
