If you’re like me, you’ve driven by the majestic Hackley and Hume homes dozens of times (if you live in Muskegon, maybe HUNDREDS of times), yet I’ve never been inside. When I heard they do holiday home tours, I thought, “now’s my chance!”
I stopped by and got a fun history lesson and tour from Erin Schmitz with the Lakeshore Museum Center. It was cool to hear about Charles H. Hackley, his lumber business in Muskegon in the late 1800’s, and his eventual business partnership with his friend, Thomas Hume. Nothing like being one of the richest men in town, but why not have your best friend and his family build a mansion next door! I also got to see some of the most intricate woodwork and stencil artistry I’ve ever seen in a historic home, it really is something to see.
The homes are decorated thanks to dozens of designers, volunteers, and museum staff. Take a minute this holiday season, bring the kids (they’re more than welcome) and see this gorgeous Muskegon treasure when they’re all decked out for the holidays.
Tour dates and times are Dec. 8th, 15th and 27th from 4-8pm, and Dec. 28th from 1-4pm. The homes are located at 484 W Western Ave. in Muskegon. Click on the Lakeshore Museum Center logo below to visit the museum website!
