Community Economic Development Association of Michigan is hosting the event "Show Me The Money Day Muskegon" - an event designed to promote our community’s free and low-cost financial services, resources for financial literacy, and provides workshops on methods to better save and spend money with the intent of financially empowering the community as a whole.
Thanks to the tip from Kimberly Lilly with the Disability Network, Gaberielle Butterfield sat down with Jasam Layne-roy of Goodwill Industries of West Michigan - the coordinator of the event at the Coffee Factory Downtown Muskegon to find out more about the event, which is happening on January 25th from 11am until 3pm at Christ Apostolic Faith Church at 412 E Sherman Blvd, Muskegon, MI
This event has been going on for 7-8 years state wide. While anybody could attend, it specifically targets low income families and individuals. One of the highlight of the event is their Free Tax Preparation services. This free service is called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) and is for families and individuals who make 60K or less. Muskegon, Newaygo and Oceana Counties residents are all eligible for this free service. All you have to do is bring in your information, drop it off with them and pick it back up in about a week. If you are unable to come to this event, simply Dial 211 and ask for VITA / tax appointment. You can also visit VITAwestmichigan.org to get more information.
Show Me the Money Day is more than just tax preparation. They also provide educational resources such as credit basics, credit repair, first time home buyer information, DIY house hold cleaning supply classes and food preparation classes on how to eat healthy on a budget. A bonus - If you have children, they can provide child care during the event and it's strongly recommended to pre-register here on Eventbrite. You can find more information on Show Me The Money Day Muskegon's Facebook page .
