With locations all around the United States Boys and Girls Club now has a home at Orchard View Schools. Boys and Girls club is meant to inspire the youth today. They help children reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens in today's society.
With parents working so much in today’s world children are left to their own devices, finding things to occupy their time. Without any adult/parental supervision children get into trouble. Boys and Girls club gives children a place to belong, a place to grow into who they are and help shape them into the people they are becoming with people that care about them. Orchard View Public Schools added the program this year. The kids love it so much that there is a waiting list. I was able to talk to Principle of OVMS Josh Smith, Lizzy Doezema (BGC Site Director) , and students Courtney Hammond and Shaimayia Jackson. Here is what Shaimayia had to say about the club when asked, “Club is good for the community because it gives kids something to do after school instead of sitting at home, or maybe their parents aren't home from work yet so they get up to things they shouldn't be doing.” When Shaimayia was asked how it felt to be part of the club she had this to say, “I feel like at club we're all brothers and sisters and we try to get along and get to know each other.”
Boys and Girls Club is not just a place to hang out, the kids get to to all sorts of hands on activities, science experiments and stem projects. Here are just some of those projects.
