May 3rd proved to be quite a lucky day for a few kids who were born at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon.  Generally one might consider March the lucky month to be born in with St. Patrick's Day and all in there, there's always a little something cool about being a New Years Baby too, but May 3rd?  I mean, even May 4th kinda seems like it's got some play in it when you say "May the Fourth Be With You" right?  Well, 5/3 just happens to be the lucky day for kids being born all over Michigan as Fifth Third Bank is getting them off to a an amazing start with $1053 in a 529 savings account as a special welcome to the work gift.  Scott Stenstrom from Fifth Third Bank joins to talk about this program and how many lucky kids got this amazing start.

From their press release - "For more than 27 years, the Bank has celebrated Fifth Third Day on May 3 (5/3 on the calendar) by recognizing employee contributions, thanking valued customers and supporting communities. This year, Fifth Third Bank wants to help families plan for the future, so the Bank is giving $1,053 to start a 529 savings account for babies born on 5/3. A 529 savings account is a tax-advantaged savings plan designed to encourage saving for college costs. The plans are sponsored by states, state agencies or educational institutions. Fifth Third is working with Gift of College to distribute the funds and to provide easy online set-up of the account for these new parents.

This is just one more way Fifth Third is committed to strengthening lives and building a stronger community. During the month of May, Fifth Third Bank and our employees also will show our commitment to ending hunger in a variety of ways, including raising money for local food pantries and through employee volunteer efforts."

It's an amazing way to start things off for these little ones.  A savings plan like that can make all the difference in the world by the time the kids are old enough to need it, and to know that interesting and fun ways to surprise parents with a gift like this all over Michigan is an amazingly generous offering by Fifth Third Bank.  Some of the other outreach that 5/3 is doing during the month is providing 1 million meals for those in need and a lot more with employee volunteerism and other acts of giving.  Babies born on 5/3 at Mercy Health St. Mary's,  Metro Health – University of Michigan Health, Munson Medical Center Traverse City and Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital will be finding their tuition started as well.  What a day for so many lucky kids to be dropped off by the stork.

We're thankful to Scott Stenstrom from 5/3 for the tip and the time talking about this gift, we're also pretty excited to welcome 8 new critters in to the world and will continue to do our part to help assure that they have a warm, safe and growing community to sprout in here in Muskegon.  For more on Fifth Third Bank, click on their logo below.  We thank Mercy Health for their continued support of our work.
