If you've been Downtown Muskegon lately, you've seen the work going on at the beautiful and historic Hackley Library.  It seems that they have been working on the front of that building for a couple years now...but that's not the only project going on in the library.  There's been plenty of busy work going on behind the scenes as well gearing up for the big sale coming up Friday morning at 10am SHARP!

The library has thousands of books in storage...they get brought back over to the library all this week and then the work begins.  Let's sort!  Anything from cookbooks, to kids books - reference to fantasy...they are all put in groups by the Friends of the Hackley Library in advance of the sale so those who come can make quick work of getting what they want and get to reading.

This is a win- win... first off... the books are priced cheap.  Yes, it's probably the deepest discount next to free you'll find.  The idea behind the pricing?  Simple...to move books. Next, the proceeds from the book sale go to support the library and all of the magnificent work they do.  Be it through just having access to the internet for some, a quiet place to read for others or one of the most historic and beautiful places we have in Muskegon for people to just come and enjoy.  So think of the book sale starting Friday as a chance to fill your book shelves on the cheap and you can do your part to help support the library other than paying your book fines. :)

Barbara Klingenmeier is with the Friends of the Hackley Library as is Carol Anne Balcom and they took a few minutes out of the sorting to talk with me a little more about the book sale, take a listen to our interview below!

There are those who will say "The library is obsolete".  I can tell you this...I am not a frequent user of the library, but the simple thought of them not being available for those who need them....it simply cannot be part of the dialogue in the United States of America.  Of all we have to protect and preserve, the library's have to be in the top 5 of any list.  The access to information, the discussion, the knowledge base and the simple center of a community is found in a library.  We need to treasure the Hackley Library like no other.  Buying a few used books....what a great way to do your part for the cause!  Book sale gets underway Friday!  Thanks to Barb for taking a few minutes to talk today.
