A couple of years ago, we sat in the back yard of a family “complex”. Well, maybe not so much of a complex, but the family does have a group of homes that are all right next to one another. That in an of itself might tell you that the close knit unity they have is a warm and welcoming approach to not only family, but friends and the community. Their particular community is based on their car collection and enthusiasm for sharing them and the experience of working on them, restoring them and then taking them out and showing them off. Suenos means dreamers. When we met up in the “complex” they were just beginning to dream up how the club would grow. Today, they are being requested to be at car shows all over the state. Must be that warm family approach sinks in.
Greg Garcia is the President of the Suenos Car Club. He starts off the chat. Everyone here, well, with the exception of the “Back Facial Gal” who makes a quick cameo, related. Brothers, cousins, in-laws…they are tight. The group itself? More of the same and it’s a family focused bunch with wives, kids, grammi’s and gramps. Common ground built on one another. An idea between a couple of them launched a way to get everyone involved and then they decided to turn it into a working tool for good. With a name like “Suenos”, bet your bottom dollar that there’s a Latino flair and if you are unfamiliar with the Muskegon Area’s Latino culture, it’s high time you get to know them. From the restaurant owners to those doing the good like Suenos, our Latino community adds to our life immensely in Muskegon.
Those doing the good? Suenos show this year benefits Kids Belong. We’re no strangers to Kids Belong. Beginning with fostering and adopting, Kids Belong got themselves positioned into a place where those who were fostered didn’t have to leave foster care when they “timed out” and just go out into the world on their own. From foster care, their kids are moved into on site housing that they can begin to learn what adult life is like. Rent that graduates over time. Learning how to budget, plan for bills, meals and sudden expenses. Why is this important? Well, young people who leave foster care without the proper education in getting in to the daily grind of lie often end up homeless…and all the time they were in foster care…really didn’t do much. Jeff and Katie Steele have changed the way foster children come out of foster care, and their impact is immense.
It’s the recognition of need, the ability to provide a service and the passion of their pastime that makes Suenos the growing and sought after car club they are. Their YouTube Channel is another big draw as are the shows they hold. Amazing trophies for participants. Really great vehicles to drool over and plenty of room for those who want to join in on the fun. The show is at Fricano’s on Muskegon Lake Labor Day Weekend. It’s a purpose filled way to spend the day with your family and you’ll find nothing but friends, purpose and maybe….we’re not quite sure….but just maybe, a return from the “Back Facial Gal”.
